Ireland VI - Achill Island
After driving south to Westport, I enjoyed a slightly slower pace for one day, visiting beautiful Achill Island just a few miles northwest. On the way I stopped at Burrishoole Abbey, an impressive 15th century ruin located along the drainage of Lough Feeagh. I then drove along the Wild Atlantic Way working my way slowly around Achill Island with beautiful viewpoints at Cloughmore and Ashleam. I spent quite a bit of time walking through Slievemore Deserted Village, which has history dating from megalithic through medieval times, and visiting a well preserved nearby megalithic portal tomb. Finally I parked at Keem Strand and hiked to the summit of Benmore, with spectacular cliffs and views along the Irish coastline.
