Turkey II - Konya and Lystra
After leaving Cappadocia, we traveled three hours west to the city of Konya (Iconium in the Bible). This city is famous in the Muslim world as the home of Mevlana and origin of the whirling dervishes. After learning a little of that history, we drove a little south of Konya to the ruins of Lystra. Very little is left here, but what remains is incredible, especially the Church of the Cross, hewed out of the natural rock. Here in Lystra, Paul healed a man who had been lame from birth. The locals first tried to worship him as a god, and later attempted to stone him. Lystra was also the home of the apostle Timothy.
