Bentonite Hills
After visiting Colorado National Monument, I drove about four hours west into Utah. I'd visited Capital Reef National Park and its surrounding area twice before, including just last May... but had one more thing left on my list. The Bentonite Hills are not particularly well known or documented and it took me a bit to figure out how easy they actually are to see. When I visited in May, I though the only area with these incredibly colorful hills was in Cathedral Valley and required a high clearance 4x4... however after reading more online and examining satellite maps, I found multiple other areas scattered around the area. If you're planning to photograph these hills, a drone is absolutely required -- while you can see them from the ground, the gorgeous scenes below are all from above, in some cases as high as 400ft (max legal drone altitude). It's also important to have either cloudy conditions, or capture them just after sunset... otherwise the colors are very washed out.
