New Zealand V: Passes and West Coast
There are only three passes which cut through the Southern Alps, connecting New Zealand's west coast with the more populated eastern side of the country. Unfortunately due to a landslide and other timing during my trip, I didn't make it to Haast Pass, but I did drive over Arthur's Pass and Lewis Pass, both located toward the north of the island. Arthur's Pass is particularly scenic, and I was able to catch it both with clouds and fresh snow as well as beautiful sunshine. The day I drove over Arthur's Pass, the weather was coming from the southeast, meaning while most of the island was cloudy, the west coast was beautiful. It was wonderful to actually see the glaciers and beautiful countryside here -- when I visited in 2016 it was pouring rain the entire time.
